HLTF antisense RNA 1 (HLTF-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the DNA strand opposite to the HLTF gene. Antisense lncRNAs such as HLTF-AS1 may regulate the expression of the corresponding protein-coding sense gene through both epigenetic and post-transcriptional mechanisms. This class of RNA can modulate tumor cell behavior, including proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and chemoresistance, but HLTF-AS1 specifically has not yet been deeply characterized for these functions or as a therapeutic target. The value of antisense lncRNAs is emerging in cancer research, where they are being studied for roles in gene expression modulation and as possible candidates for intervention, although there are as yet no approved drugs or clinical biomarkers specifically targeting HLTF-AS1. HLTF antisense RNA 1 is distinct from the HLTF gene itself, which encodes the Helicase-like transcription factor, a protein with tumorigenic and genome stability functions. Current knowledge mostly extrapolates the general function of antisense lncRNAs rather than HLTF-AS1 specifically, as comprehensive characterization of HLTF-AS1 is lacking in the literature.
