HMGA2 antisense RNA 1 (HMGA2-AS1)

Target
HMGA2-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Natural antisense transcript
01

Overview

HMGA2 antisense RNA 1 (HMGA2-AS1) is a natural antisense long non-coding RNA gene located at the HMGA2 locus. It is expressed in multiple cancer cell lines, where its expression correlates with HMGA2 levels. HMGA2-AS1 positively regulates HMGA2, influencing cell migration and tumorigenesis via HMGA2-dependent mechanisms. High HMGA2-AS1 expression is linked to poor prognosis and aggressive cancer phenotypes, particularly in pancreatic cancer. The transcript is subdivided into several variants, with specific roles in gene regulation and cell motility. HMGA2-AS1 represents a novel layer of post-transcriptional regulation and a promising target for future therapeutic approaches in cancer[1][3].

Mechanism of action

(For potential agents) Inhibition or silencing of HMGA2-AS1 (e.g., via siRNA), leading to reduced HMGA2 expression and decreased cell migration/proliferation

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (specifically HMGA2)Modulation of cell migration and motilityPromotion of tumorigenesis (via HMGA2-dependent mechanisms)Involvement in mesenchymal stem cell differentiation and adipogenesis
04

Disease associations

Cancer (pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, breast, colon, liver, thyroid cancer, based on expression studies)Potential role in metastatic progression
05

Biomarkers

High HMGA2-AS1 expression is associated with poor prognosis in pancreatic cancerHMGA2-AS1 levels may serve as a biomarker for tumor aggressiveness or metastatic potential
