Holotrichia consanguinea

01

Overview

Holotrichia consanguinea, commonly known as the Indian white grub, is a species of beetle in the family Scarabaeidae and is not a molecular therapeutic target, receptor, or enzyme. It is one of the most significant polyphagous agricultural pests in India, particularly destructive to crops like groundnut, sugarcane, and sorghum (NCBI Taxonomy ID: 391515). The larval stage of the insect lives in the soil and feeds on the roots of plants, which often leads to the death of the host plant and massive yield losses for farmers. While it is a 'target' for agrochemical interventions and pest management strategies, it does not fit the criteria of a drug target in the context of human biology or pharmacology. Researchers study specific proteins within this organism, such as odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), to develop targeted pest control methods, but the name Holotrichia consanguinea refers to the whole organism rather than a specific biomolecule.
