Homeobox protein HMX3 (abbreviated as HMX3) is a transcription factor belonging to the H6 family of homeobox proteins. It binds DNA in a sequence-specific manner and plays a critical role in specifying neuronal cell identities, as well as being essential for inner ear and hypothalamus development. HMX3 controls semicircular canal formation in the inner ear and is required for the normal development of the hypothalamic/pituitary axis in the central nervous system. Mutations or dysregulation of HMX3 are associated with developmental syndromes such as oculoauricular syndrome and superior semicircular canal dehiscence[1][2][6].
