Homeobox protein Hox-A13 (HOXA13) is a sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factor belonging to the homeobox gene family, critical in vertebrate embryonic development. It controls the formation of limbs, urinary tract, and reproductive organs by regulating expression of key developmental genes. Mutations or polyalanine expansions in HOXA13 cause hand-foot-genital syndrome, a condition characterized by malformations in limbs and urogenital tract. In addition, chromosomal rearrangements involving HOXA13 are associated with certain leukemias, and abnormal HOXA13 expression is implicated in the pathogenesis of Barrett's esophagus, a precursor to esophageal cancer[1][2][3][5].
