Homeobox protein Hox-A7 (HOXA7) is a sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factor encoded by the HOXA7 gene on chromosome 7, part of the homeobox A gene cluster. HOXA7 plays a crucial role in regulating gene expression during embryonic development, morphogenesis, and cell differentiation, providing positional information along the anterior-posterior axis. Its tightly regulated expression ensures proper cell fate decisions in various developmental contexts. Aberrant upregulation or fusion events involving HOXA7 drive leukemogenic processes and are adverse prognostic markers in several cancers, particularly acute myeloid leukemia. HOXA7 does not appear to be a direct target of approved drugs but is considered a potential therapeutic target given its role in gene regulation and disease progression.
