Homeobox protein Hox-C12 (HOXC12)

Target
HOXC12
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Developmental regulatory protein, DNA-binding protein
01

Overview

Homeobox protein Hox-C12 is a sequence-specific transcription factor encoded by the HOXC12 gene, located in the HOXC cluster on chromosome 12. It plays essential roles in establishing positional identities of cells along the anterior-posterior axis during development and is actively involved in morphogenesis—including hair follicle maturation and appendicular skeleton patterning. HOXC12 is under epigenetic regulation and interacts closely with the long noncoding RNA HOTAIR, influencing gene expression profiles relevant to developmental biology and oncogenesis. Disease associations primarily include congenital limb malformations and certain syndromes affecting hair and nail formation, but it is not considered a therapeutic drug target in current clinical practice.

Safety considerations

Targeting HOXC12 itself poses developmental risks due to its key role in embryogenesis and tissue morphogenesis
05

Biomarkers

HOXC12 expression patterns may have biomarker utility in congenital limb disorders and in developmental biology researchIts regulation by the long noncoding RNA HOTAIR is relevant in cancer research contexts
