Overview

Homeobox protein Hox-D1 (HOXD1) is a nuclear transcription factor belonging to the Antennapedia homeobox family, encoded by the HOXD1 gene. It plays a critical role in establishing positional identity along the anterior-posterior body axis and is involved in embryonic differentiation and limb development. The HOXD1 protein contains a highly-con-served homeodomain responsible for sequence-specific DNA binding, acting as a master regulator during early development. Mutations or altered expression in HOXD1 are associated with significant developmental abnormalities and may have cancer-inhibiting properties[1][3][4][6]. HOXD1 is not a therapeutic target for any current drugs[3][7], but experimental studies in animals implicate its role in migration and differentiation of neural crest cells and regulation of genes related to cell motility and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition[4].
