Homeobox protein Hox-D8 (HOXD8)

Homeobox protein Hox-D8 is a highly conserved, sequence-specific transcription factor encoded by the HOXD8 gene in humans. It forms part of the homeobox (HOX) family, which governs embryonic development and morphogenesis in multicellular organisms. This protein is essential for providing cells with positional identity during limb and genital tract formation. Deletions or mutations in the HOXD cluster, including HOXD8, lead to severe congenital malformations of the limbs and urogenital system. In addition to its role in development, HOXD8 is expressed in adult tissues, including the urogenital tract, and displays altered expression in several cancer types (as a potential prognostic marker rather than a direct therapeutic target)[1][2][4][5].
