NANOG is a transcription factor crucial for maintaining the pluripotency and self-renewal of embryonic stem cells (ESCs). High NANOG expression correlates with several types of cancer; it enables cancer cells to acquire stem-cell-like properties associated with aggressive tumor behavior and treatment resistance.
