Homeobox protein Nkx-2.6 (NKX2-6)

Target
NKX2-6
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Homeobox gene family

Overview

Homeobox protein Nkx-2.6 (NKX2-6) is a DNA-binding transcription factor belonging to the NK-2 homeobox family, and is a vertebrate homolog of Drosophila 'tinman.' It functions as a transcriptional activator and plays a crucial role, together with NKX2-5, in embryonic development of both the pharynx and the heart, particularly cardiac morphogenesis. Mutations in NKX2-6 have been associated with some forms of congenital heart defects, such as conotruncal heart malformations and persistent truncus arteriosus. However, it is not considered an established therapeutic drug target[1][5][7].
