Homeobox protein NKX6-3 (NKX6-3)

Target
NKX6-3
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Homeobox protein
01

Overview

Homeobox protein NKX6-3 is a member of the NK6 subfamily of homeobox transcription factors characterized by a homeodomain that binds DNA to regulate gene transcription. It is expressed in the developing central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract, where it plays a role in the patterning and differentiation of neural and epithelial cells. NKX6-3 is implicated in the negative regulation of gastric mucosal atrophy and inflammatory signaling, which links it to roles in cancer and inflammatory conditions of the gut. However, it is primarily considered a developmental transcription factor rather than a classic therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme.

Disease associations

Cancer (loss or dysregulation linked to gastric carcinogenesis and other tumor types)Inflammation (regulates inflammatory responses in gastric epithelium)Other (role in gastrointestinal disorders linked to altered cell differentiation)

Safety considerations

Limited knowledge of pharmacological targeting and systemic effectsRole as a transcription factor raises potential concern for broad off-target effects if inhibited or modulated
