The host adaptive immune system, also known as the acquired or specific immune system, is a subsystem of the overall immune system in vertebrates. It is composed of highly specialized cells and processes that specifically recognize and eliminate pathogens (such as bacteria, viruses, fungi) and tumor cells. Unlike the innate immune system—which provides immediate but non-specific defense—the adaptive immune response is highly specific to each particular pathogen encountered by the host. Key features include specificity, memory, diversity and self/non-self discrimination. Its main components are B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, antibodies and the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC).
