Overview

The host adaptive immune system is a sophisticated subsystem of the overall immune system composed of highly specialized cells and processes that eliminate pathogens or prevent their growth (NIH, 2023). Unlike the innate immune system, the adaptive response is characterized by its specificity for particular antigens and the development of immunological memory, which allows for a more rapid and vigorous response upon subsequent exposure to the same pathogen (Janeway et al., 2001). The primary components include B lymphocytes, which mediate humoral immunity by secreting antibodies, and T lymphocytes, which facilitate cell-mediated immunity through cytokine production or direct cytotoxicity (StatPearls, 2023). In the context of vaccines, the immunostimulatory vaccine effect refers to the deliberate induction of this system to recognize a specific pathogen-derived antigen, thereby providing protective immunity (CDC, 2022). Because this effect involves a coordinated cascade of multiple cell types, signaling pathways, and molecular interactions, it is classified as a systemic physiological response rather than a discrete molecular pharmacological target like a single receptor or enzyme. Consequently, while it is the functional objective of many therapies, it does not fit the definition of a discrete molecular pharmacological target.

Mechanism of action

Stimulation of the adaptive immune response via antigen presentation by professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs) to T lymphocytes, leading to the activation, proliferation, and differentiation of antigen-specific B and T cells, ultimately establishing long-term immunological memory (CDC, 2022; Janeway et al., 2001).
