Target intelligence / Profile preview
The host adaptive immune system responding to influenza viral antigens represents the specialized physiological defense mechanism activated upon exposure to influenza viruses or vaccines. This system is characterized by the activation of B lymphocytes, which produce neutralizing antibodies targeting the viral hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) proteins to prevent infection (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2019). Simultaneously, T lymphocyte responses, including CD4+ helper and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells, are mobilized to support antibody production and eliminate virus-infected cells, respectively (NIH, 2022). While not a single molecular target, this system is the primary focus of prophylactic influenza vaccines, which aim to induce long-lasting immunological memory (CDC, 2023). Therapeutic strategies often involve the use of adjuvants to enhance the magnitude and breadth of this adaptive response, particularly in vulnerable populations like the elderly (WHO, 2021). Understanding the nuances of this system is essential for the development of next-generation vaccines that can provide broader protection against drifting viral strains.
Induction of humoral and cellular immunity through antigen presentation, B-cell maturation into antibody-secreting plasma cells, and the generation of memory T and B cells (CDC, 2023; Nature Reviews Immunology, 2019).
