Overview

Host cell genomic DNA refers to the complete collection of double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) found in the nucleus (and in organelles such as mitochondria) of eukaryotic cells or in the nucleoid of prokaryotic cells. It consists of millions to billions of base pairs arranged in chromosomes, encoding all the information necessary for growth, development, and cellular function. The term encompasses both coding sequences (genes) and vast regions of regulatory and repetitive DNA. Genomic DNA serves as the template for replication, transcription, and cellular inheritance but poses safety concerns if residual DNA fragments from host cells are present in biologic therapeutics due to oncogenic or infectious risks.
