Host Cell Glycoprotein Processing

Molecular classification
Cellular pathway/process
01

Overview

Host cell glycoprotein processing refers to the series of cellular mechanisms by which proteins are modified with carbohydrate (glycan) groups after their synthesis. This process, known as glycosylation, occurs primarily in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi apparatus of eukaryotic cells. Glycosylation is essential for proper protein folding, stability, transport, and function. It also plays a critical role in cell-cell communication and immune recognition. Pathogens may exploit these pathways to enhance their own virulence factors' function/stability or evade immune responses through "glycan shielding". Targeting this process can inhibit pathogen replication/maturation.
