Overview

The host cellular immune response is a complex physiological process primarily mediated by T lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, and macrophages to protect the organism against intracellular pathogens and neoplastic cells. Unlike humoral immunity, which relies on antibody production, cellular immunity involves the direct activation of immune cells and the secretion of various cytokines to coordinate a targeted attack on infected or abnormal cells (StatPearls, 2023). This system is essential for the recognition of antigens presented by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and the subsequent execution of effector functions such as cytotoxicity and inflammatory signaling (NIH, 2022). In clinical practice, this response is a major focus of therapeutic intervention; for instance, immune checkpoint inhibitors are used to reinvigorate exhausted T cells in oncology, while immunosuppressants are used to prevent organ rejection or treat autoimmune disorders (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2021). Because it encompasses a vast network of signaling pathways and diverse cell types, it is considered a broad biological system or therapeutic category rather than a single, discrete molecular target. Consequently, drugs affecting this response often have systemic effects, requiring careful monitoring for safety concerns like cytokine release syndrome or secondary immunodeficiency.
