Host cellular ingrowth

Overview

Host cellular ingrowth is the process by which host cells migrate into and proliferate within a scaffold, graft, or implant, enabling tissue integration, vascularization, and regeneration. This phenomenon is a critical determinant of the success of regenerative biomaterials and tissue engineering approaches. Effective host cellular ingrowth is influenced by the scaffold's physical and chemical properties, the presence of bioactive molecules, and the local immune response. Macrophage phenotype (M1 inflammatory vs. M2 regenerative) plays a pivotal role in dictating whether ingrowth leads to functional tissue repair or to scarring and fibrosis. The term is not a molecular target but reflects a desired biological outcome in regenerative medicine and implant biology.
