Overview

Host enterocyte glycans are complex carbohydrate structures located on the surface of intestinal epithelial cells (enterocytes), including N-linked and O-linked glycans found on glycoproteins and glycolipids. They serve as critical mediators of the gut barrier, providing binding sites for both commensal and pathogenic microorganisms and being directly involved in immune system signaling and physical protection of the epithelium. Many commensal bacteria, especially Bacteroides species, have evolved to utilize these glycans as nutrient sources, dynamically adjusting their degradation machinery based on host diet and available substrates[1][2]. Conversely, pathogens such as Salmonella or certain streptococci exploit these host glycan surfaces for adhesion and invasion by expressing specific glycan-degrading enzymes. Alterations in glycan structure or expression can influence susceptibility to infection and inflammation, affect microbiota composition, and modulate immune homeostasis[3][4][5]. "Host enterocyte glycan" is not a single protein or gene, but rather a heterogeneous, cell-surface ensemble of carbohydrate moieties—thus, it is not considered a conventional drug target molecule such as a receptor or enzyme[1][4][6]. For these reasons, it is not assigned structured identifiers such as canonical abbreviation or drug interactions.
