Host glucose metabolism refers to the ensemble of transporters, enzymes, and regulatory pathways by which cells take up glucose from extracellular space (via facilitative transporters such as GLUT family members and sodium-dependent SGLTs), convert it to energy and biosynthetic precursors primarily via glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and regulate systemic glucose levels in concert with hormonal signals such as insulin. Disruptions in host glucose metabolism occur in many diseases including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases, and this process can be hijacked by pathogens to support replication or pathogenesis[1][2][3][5].
