Overview

Host immune cell" refers to any cellular component of the immune system of a given host, such as a human or animal. Major host immune cell types include lymphocytes (e.g., T cells, B cells, natural killer cells), monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, dendritic cells, eosinophils, basophils, and mast cells. These cells can be further subdivided into functional populations (e.g., helper T cells, regulatory T cells, cytotoxic T cells, M1/M2 macrophages)[4][5][6]. Immune cells are classified as part of either the innate or adaptive immune system and have diverse biological functions such as pathogen recognition, antigen presentation, phagocytosis, cytokine production, direct cytotoxicity, antibody generation, immune surveillance, and the maintenance of tissue homeostasis[4][5]. The roles and relative abundance of these cells can vary dramatically in different disease contexts, such as infection, cancer, and autoimmune conditions[1][3][4]. Because "host immune cells" does not refer to a unique molecular entity or druggable target but rather to a diverse cellular network, the term is too broad for use as a canonical drug target or structured molecular entity.
