Host immune system activity

Host immune system activity refers to the collective physiological processes of the innate and adaptive immune systems designed to protect an organism from pathogens, toxins, and malignant cells (NIH, 2023). It involves a complex network of cells, tissues, and signaling molecules that coordinate to identify and eliminate foreign or harmful entities while maintaining self-tolerance (Janeway's Immunobiology, 2017). In various disease states, this activity can be either insufficient, leading to chronic infections or cancer progression, or excessive, resulting in autoimmune disorders and chronic inflammation (StatPearls, 2023). Therapeutic intervention typically involves immunomodulation, where drugs either stimulate the immune response to combat tumors and viruses or suppress it to treat inflammatory and autoimmune conditions (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2020). Because it encompasses a vast array of molecular pathways rather than a single protein, it is considered a biological process or system-level state rather than a specific therapeutic target.
