Overview

Host mucosal and epithelial cells represent the specialized cellular layers that line the internal surfaces of the body, including the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts (National Center for Biotechnology Information, 2023). These cells serve as a critical interface and barrier, regulating the passage of ions, nutrients, and water while providing a first line of defense against pathogens and environmental toxins (StatPearls, 2023). They are characterized by their polarized structure and the presence of tight junctions that maintain barrier integrity (PubMed, 2021). In disease states, the dysfunction of these cells can lead to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, and various infections where pathogens exploit surface receptors for entry (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2020). While they are not a single molecular target, these cells express a multitude of specific proteins, such as the ACE2 receptor or various ion channels, which are the actual focus of therapeutic intervention (UniProt, 2023). Consequently, drugs targeting these cells often aim to modulate inflammatory signaling, restore barrier function, or block viral and bacterial attachment (Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2022).
