Overview

Host muscle cells, or myocytes, are the fundamental units of muscle tissue responsible for generating physical force and movement through contraction (StatPearls, 2023). They are classified into skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle types, each serving unique physiological roles such as locomotion, blood circulation, and peristalsis (Wikipedia, 2024). While host muscle cells are not a specific molecular target, they contain a multitude of receptors, enzymes, and ion channels that serve as targets for drugs like insulin, beta-blockers, and neuromuscular relaxants (PubMed, 2022). They also play a critical role in diseases such as muscular dystrophy, sarcopenia, and various metabolic disorders (NIH, 2023). Furthermore, certain pathogens, including the parasite Trichinella spiralis and certain viruses, specifically target and reside within host muscle cells during their life cycles (CDC, 2021). In drug development, muscle cells are frequently evaluated for potential myotoxicity, a significant safety concern for many systemic therapies.

Mechanism of action

Drugs do not target the cell as a whole but rather specific molecular components within it, such as the insulin receptor for metabolic regulation, ryanodine receptors for calcium signaling, or HMG-CoA reductase for cholesterol synthesis.
