The host myocardium is the thick, muscular middle layer of the heart wall, primarily composed of specialized cells known as cardiomyocytes (StatPearls, 2023). Its primary biological function is to facilitate the rhythmic contraction and relaxation required to pump blood throughout the circulatory system, a process regulated by complex electrical impulses and calcium signaling (NIH, 2022). Clinical management of myocardial diseases involves drugs like beta-blockers and anti-arrhythmics, which modulate the tissue's physiological response to maintain cardiac output. Monitoring the health of the host myocardium is typically achieved through imaging and the detection of specific biomarkers, such as cardiac troponins, which are released into the bloodstream following tissue injury (PubMed, 2021).
