Overview

Host oral tissues refer to the complex biological structures of the mouth, including the gingiva, oral mucosa, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. These tissues function as a protective barrier and are involved in the initial stages of digestion and immune surveillance (StatPearls, 2023). Pathological conditions such as periodontitis involve a breakdown of these tissues driven by an exaggerated host inflammatory response to microbial biofilms (PubMed, 2021). While not a single molecular target, these tissues are the site of action for various therapeutic agents, including antimicrobials, anti-inflammatories, and analgesics. Therapeutic strategies often aim to modulate the host response or eradicate local pathogens to maintain tissue integrity and function (NIDCR, 2022). Understanding the cellular composition and microenvironment of oral tissues is critical for developing effective topical and systemic treatments for oral diseases (Nature Reviews Disease Primers, 2017).

Mechanism of action

Drugs interacting with host oral tissues generally exert their effects through topical antimicrobial action, local anesthetic inhibition of nerve impulses, or anti-inflammatory modulation of the host immune response within the mucosal and periodontal environment (PubChem, 2023; PubMed, 2021).
