Host plant proteins (HPPs) are the collective group of endogenous proteins produced by a plant host organism, such as Nicotiana benthamiana, when used as a biofactory for recombinant biopharmaceutical production (Source: Frontiers in Plant Science, 2019). In the context of drug manufacturing, HPPs are classified as process-related impurities rather than therapeutic targets (Source: Plant Biotechnology Journal, 2010). These proteins represent a heterogeneous mixture of enzymes, structural components, and metabolic factors native to the host plant (Source: BioProcess International, 2014).
