Overview

Host T-cell activation via antigen presentation is a fundamental process in the adaptive immune response, where T cells are activated by recognizing antigens presented on the surface of antigen-presenting cells (APCs). This process ensures that T cells can detect and respond to pathogens, infected cells, or abnormal self-cells. Key components include APCs (dendritic cells, macrophages, B cells), MHC molecules (MHC I and MHC II), T cell receptor (TCR) recognition, costimulatory signals (B7-CD28, CD40-CD40L), and adhesion molecules. This mechanism underlies vaccine efficacy, tumor immunosurveillance, transplant rejection, and autoimmunity. Manipulation of this pathway forms a basis for many immunotherapies.
