House dust mite allergens are a group of proteins produced by mites such as Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae. These proteins are major triggers of allergic diseases, including asthma, rhinitis, and eczema in sensitized individuals. Key allergens include Der p 1, Der f 1 (cysteine proteases), Der p 2/Der f 2 (NPC2 family proteins), and Der p/f 7 (Bactericidal permeability-increasing-like proteins). These allergens induce strong IgE-mediated responses and activate proinflammatory cytokines from respiratory epithelium. Sensitization often begins early in life, and cross-reactivity occurs between homologous allergens from different species.
Variable depending on the specific allergen. For example, Der p 1 is a cysteine protease that disrupts epithelial barriers and activates PAR-2, leading to cytokine release. Der f/p 2 are lipid-binding proteins that promote Th2 cell generation.
