House dust mite allergens (Dermatophagoides farinae, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus)

Molecular classification
Allergen, Proteins
01

Overview

House dust mite allergens are proteins derived from two primary species of mites: *Dermatophagoides farinae* and *Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus*. These allergens are a leading cause of allergic sensitization globally, inducing allergic rhinitis, asthma exacerbations, and atopic dermatitis. The major allergenic proteins include Der f 1, Der f 2, Der f 11, and Der f 23 for *D. farinae*, and Der p 1 and Der p 2 for *D. pteronyssinus*. Exposure occurs primarily through inhalation, ingestion or direct contact with contaminated materials, triggering an IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reaction. Immunotherapy is available for diagnosis and treatment.
