Overview

HPN antisense RNA 1 (HPN-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) classified as an antisense RNA, located on chromosome 19 and transcribed in the antisense direction relative to the hepsin (HPN) gene[1][3][4][7][10]. It does not encode a protein and functions primarily through RNA-mediated mechanisms. HPN-AS1 has been identified as a potential prognostic biomarker in several human cancers[3], and some experimental data suggest it may regulate cell proliferation and apoptosis, for example by promoting eIF4A3 degradation in hepatocellular carcinoma. Although associated with cancer phenotypes and considered in biomarker studies, it is not itself a therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or classic drug target[3][6]. Other disease associations include renal cysts and diabetes syndrome[4]. No drugs directly target HPN-AS1 as of current knowledge.
