HsaA monooxygenase is a flavin-dependent monooxygenase enzyme found in Mycobacterium species, notably *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*. It plays a key role in the bacterial catabolism of steroids, specifically in the degradation pathway of cholesterol and related compounds. It catalyzes the ortho-hydroxylation of 3-hydroxy-9,10-secoandrosta-1,3,5(10)-triene-9,17-dione (3-HSA) to produce 3,4-dihydroxy-9,10-secoandrosta-1,3-diene-9,17-dione (3,4-DHSA). Essential for survival of *M. tuberculosis* inside macrophages under immune stress conditions—highlighting its importance for bacterial pathogenesis and persistence during infection.
