Overview

HSD17B2 antisense RNA 1 (HSD17B2-AS1) is a long non-coding antisense RNA gene located opposite to HSD17B2 on the genome[8]. As a member of the antisense RNA family, it is not translated into protein but is believed to regulate the expression of HSD17B2, which encodes a key enzyme involved in the inactivation of steroid hormones[6][3]. Antisense RNA molecules such as HSD17B2-AS1 can influence their sense gene counterparts by modulating transcription, RNA processing, or chromatin structure, a common mechanism for lncRNAs[3]. However, there is currently no direct evidence that HSD17B2-AS1 serves as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other conventional drug target, nor are there any described drugs or therapeutic strategies directly targeting this RNA[2][8][6][3]. No specific roles in human disease have been firmly established for HSD17B2-AS1 itself.
