HTR3E antisense RNA 1 (HTR3E-AS1) is a long noncoding antisense RNA gene transcribed from the locus opposite the HTR3E (5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 3E) gene on chromosome 3[5][3]. As with other antisense RNAs, HTR3E-AS1 is presumed to regulate gene expression of its sense counterpart (HTR3E), possibly through mechanisms such as RNA-RNA hybridization, transcriptional interference, or chromatin modification. While general functions of antisense RNAs include modulation of gene expression and involvement in epigenetic regulation, no direct link between HTR3E-AS1 and a specific human disease, drug interaction, or therapeutic use has been documented[2][5]. Antisense RNAs overall are of emerging interest in the regulation of disease genes, particularly in cancer, but HTR3E-AS1 itself is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target. Note: HTR3E-AS1 is often listed in background gene databases and should not be confused with the closely related protein-coding gene HTR3E, which encodes a serotonin receptor subunit involved in neurotransmission[4][1].
