Human β-defensin-2 (hBD-2) is a small, cationic, cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptide that plays a crucial role in the innate immune response. It is primarily produced by epithelial cells in response to microbial invasion or pro-inflammatory cytokines and provides protection against bacteria, fungi, and some viruses. Beyond direct microbicidal action, it acts as a chemoattractant for dendritic cells, T-cells, and monocytes. Recent research suggests hBD-2 may have roles beyond host defense, including potential dual inhibitor activity against MMP‑9 and PKC‑βII enzymes implicated in inflammation/cancer progression.
