Overview

The human adaptive immune response to attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella viruses is a systemic physiological process elicited by vaccination to confer long-term immunity. Upon administration of the MMR vaccine, the live-attenuated viral components replicate minimally, prompting the immune system to recognize viral antigens and initiate both humoral and cell-mediated responses (CDC, 2021). This process leads to the generation of virus-specific neutralizing antibodies and memory T cells, which effectively prevent infection and disease transmission (WHO, 2023). The response is critical for preventing severe complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and congenital rubella syndrome (StatPearls, 2023). While generally safe and highly effective, the induction of this immune response requires careful consideration in patients with immunodeficiencies, as the live-attenuated nature of the vaccine poses a risk of uncontrolled viral replication (PubMed, 2022).

Mechanism of action

The MMR vaccine introduces live-attenuated viruses that undergo limited replication, stimulating the innate immune system to activate B cells and T cells. This results in the production of neutralizing IgG antibodies and the establishment of long-lived memory B and T cells that provide protection against future exposure to wild-type viruses (StatPearls, 2023; CDC, 2021).
