Overview

Adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) is a human adenovirus belonging to the family Adenoviridae. It is a medium-sized, non-enveloped virus with an icosahedral capsid structure and a linear, double-stranded DNA genome. Ad5 causes respiratory illnesses ranging from mild pharyngitis or conjunctivitis to severe pneumonia or bronchiolitis. Recombinant vectors based on Ad5 are widely used in gene therapy research but face challenges from pre-existing immunity within human populations.
