Human adenovirus type 7 (HAdV-7) is a nonenveloped, double-stranded DNA virus within the genus Mastadenovirus, species B. It is a major cause of severe respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, particularly in children and close-contact populations (e.g., military recruits). HAdV-7 is distinguished from other types by molecular characteristics in the hexon, fiber, and E4 ORF 6/7 genes and is associated with robust viral replication, severe acute airway inflammation, and an exacerbated cytokine response. HAdV-7 outbreaks can cause significant morbidity and, rarely, mortality. Current clinical management is limited to supportive care, with off-label antiviral drugs considered in extreme cases.
Nucleotide analogs (e.g., cidofovir) inhibit viral DNA polymerase, thereby blocking viral DNA replication. Immunoglobulins (very rarely, in immunosuppressed patients) may neutralize the virus.
