Overview

Human antigen R (HuR), also known as ELAV-like protein 1 (ELAVL1), is a ubiquitously expressed RNA-binding protein that plays a central role in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. It binds to AU-rich elements (AREs) in the 3′ untranslated regions (UTRs) of target mRNAs, stabilizing them and influencing their translation into proteins. HuR is involved in several key cellular processes, including embryonic development, stress responses, immune system regulation, cell cycle control, and apoptosis. It has been implicated in pathological conditions such as tumorigenesis, inflammation, cardiac hypertrophy/fibrosis, neurodegeneration, and liver disease. Given its central role, HuR is considered a promising therapeutic target for cancer treatment and other diseases characterized by aberrant post-transcriptional gene regulation.
