Overview

Human bronchi are the major conducting airways of the respiratory system, branching from the trachea to deliver air into the lungs (StatPearls, 2023). They are composed of smooth muscle, cartilage, and a ciliated mucosal lining, which together facilitate air transport and the removal of foreign particles via the mucociliary escalator (NIH, 2024). While Human bronchi is an anatomical structure rather than a single molecular target, it contains numerous specific targets for pharmacological intervention, most notably the beta-2 adrenergic receptors and muscarinic M3 receptors (NCBI, 2022). Pathological conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) involve bronchial inflammation, constriction, and remodeling, leading to impaired airflow (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Drugs targeting the bronchi, such as bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids, aim to alleviate these symptoms by acting on the underlying cellular receptors and inflammatory pathways within the airway tissue (PubMed, 2021).

Mechanism of action

Drugs act on specific receptors within the bronchial tissue, such as beta-2 adrenergic receptors (agonism) or muscarinic receptors (antagonism), to modulate smooth muscle tone and airway caliber (NCBI, 2022).
