Overview

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), also known as human herpesvirus 5 (HHV-5), is a ubiquitous virus that belongs to the Herpesviridae family. It establishes lifelong latency after primary infection and can reactivate under immunosuppressed conditions. HCMV infection is widespread, with prevalence varying by region. While often asymptomatic in healthy individuals, HCMV can cause severe disease in immunocompromised patients and congenital defects if transmitted to a fetus. Recent research suggests a potential oncomodulatory role for certain HCMV strains in cancer development. There is currently no vaccine, and antiviral treatments are used to manage severe disease.
