Overview

The G0.10 mRNA is a specific 1.0-kilobase transcript of the Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) that is predominantly expressed in cells that have entered a quiescent (G0) state, such as CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor cells. It was first identified by Kondo et al. in 1996 and is considered a hallmark of HCMV latency, as it is transcribed during the latent phase of infection when most other viral genes are silenced. The G0.10 transcript is located within the UL region of the HCMV genome and is thought to play a critical role in maintaining the virus in a latent state and preventing the initiation of the lytic cycle. Understanding the function of G0.10 is essential for developing strategies to eradicate latent HCMV reservoirs, which are a major cause of morbidity in immunocompromised patients. While no specific drugs currently target G0.10, it remains a significant focus of research for potential gene-silencing interventions or as a diagnostic biomarker for latent infection.
