Human Cytomegalovirus Glycoprotein B (gB)

Target
gB
Molecular classification
Viral Fusion Protein, Envelope Glycoprotein
01

Overview

Human cytomegalovirus glycoprotein B (gB) is a highly conserved, envelope-associated glycoprotein essential for the entry of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) into host cells. It acts as the primary viral fusogen, mediating fusion between the viral envelope and host cell membranes. gB is required for initial virion attachment and subsequent stable binding. It also facilitates direct cell-to-cell spread of HCMV. gB elicits strong humoral immune responses, but most anti-gB antibodies are non-neutralizing due to epitope shielding by glycans.
