Overview

The Human cytomegalovirus immediate early gene region 2 mRNA is a viral transcript produced during the immediate early phase of HCMV infection. It encodes the IE2 protein (also known as UL122), a major transcriptional regulator essential for initiating viral gene expression and promoting efficient viral replication[3][4]. The mRNA is generated from the major immediate early locus, sharing regulatory and structural features with the IE1 mRNA[3][4]. The untranslated regions, particularly the 5′ UTR, form complex secondary structures (including stem loops) that are critical for efficient translation of IE1 and IE2 proteins and thus for viral replication[4]. This transcript is not, in itself, considered a traditional drug target like a protein or receptor, and it is not listed as a canonical therapeutic target in drug development databases. Targeting of HCMV typically focuses on the proteins encoded by immediate early genes, not the mRNA directly[3][4].
