The Human cytomegalovirus immediate early gene region 2 mRNA is a viral transcript produced during the immediate early phase of HCMV infection. It encodes the IE2 protein (also known as UL122), a major transcriptional regulator essential for initiating viral gene expression and promoting efficient viral replication[3][4]. The mRNA is generated from the major immediate early locus, sharing regulatory and structural features with the IE1 mRNA[3][4].
