Target intelligence / Profile preview

Human Cytomegalovirus Immediate Early Region 2 mRNA (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
mRNA, Viral mRNA, Transcription factor (mRNA encoding)
01

Overview

The human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) immediate early region 2 (IE2) mRNA encodes a family of regulatory proteins that are among the first viral gene products expressed upon infection. These proteins play essential roles in initiating and regulating the lytic replication cycle of HCMV, as well as modulating host cell responses. IE2 functions as a multifunctional transcription factor, activating transcription of viral early genes, repressing its own promoter, and modulating host immune responses. Because it's essential for initiating lytic infection cycles, it is an attractive target for antiviral strategies.
