The hERG (human Ether-à-go-go-Related Gene) channel, also known as I_Kr, is a voltage-gated inward rectifier potassium channel crucial for cardiac repolarization. Encoded by the KCNH2 gene, its protein product Kv11.1 forms a tetrameric channel that preferentially conducts potassium ions inward, shaping the action potential duration in cardiac myocytes. Dysfunction or drug-induced inhibition of hERG can lead to Long QT Syndrome and life-threatening arrhythmias.
Drugs can inhibit hERG channel function, leading to delayed cardiac repolarization.
