01

Overview

The hERG (human Ether-a-go-go-Related Gene) potassium channel is crucial for the electrical activity of the heart. It encodes the pore-forming subunit of the rapidly activating delayed rectifier potassium channel (I_Kr), which plays a key role in cardiac repolarization. Dysfunction or blockage of hERG can lead to Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) and sudden cardiac death. Many drugs have been withdrawn from the market due to their ability to block hERG channels, leading to dangerous arrhythmias. Understanding the structure and function of the hERG channel is crucial for developing safe drugs and for studying cardiac arrhythmias.
