Human fetal dermal fibroblasts are specialized cells derived from the embryonic mesoderm that play a crucial role in skin development and wound healing. These cells exhibit distinctive spindle-shaped morphology, secrete a non-rigid extracellular matrix rich in type I and/or type III collagen, and are notable for their unique properties that contribute to scarless wound repair in early fetal development. They differ from adult dermal fibroblasts in collagen production, growth factor response, and signaling pathways, particularly the Annexin1-FPR1 pathway.
