Human gingival epithelial progenitor cells (G-EPCs) are a specialized population of stem-like cells residing in the basal layer of the gingival epithelium, characterized by their ability to self-renew and differentiate into mature keratocytes (Miyake et al., 2006). The cellular membranes of these progenitor cells are complex biological structures consisting of a phospholipid bilayer integrated with various functional proteins, such as integrins and cadherins, which facilitate cell-matrix adhesion and intercellular communication (Fawzy El-Sayed et al., 2015). These membranes play a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the oral mucosal barrier and are involved in the early stages of wound healing and tissue regeneration following periodontal injury. In pharmacological research, G-EPC membranes are not considered a discrete therapeutic target for drug binding; rather, they are studied as a component of the cellular environment in periodontal diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. Furthermore, these membranes are being explored in bioengineering for the development of cell-membrane-coated nanoparticles, which aim to mimic the natural interface of G-EPCs to improve the delivery and biocompatibility of therapeutic agents in the oral cavity.
